The classic Brandy Alexander cocktail is the perfect finish to a holiday meal.  This cocktail is warm and cool all at the same time while being an adult dessert that your guests will savor.

 

What is a Brandy Alexander?

A Classic Brandy Alexander is a cocktail that first came about in the early 20th century.  This cocktail is made with only three ingredients. 

  • Cognac
  • Creme de Cacao 
  • Fresh Cream

Prior to using brandy in this cocktail, it was simply made with gin.  When the cocktail was made only with gin it was named the Alexander.  Once bartenders started using cognac or brandy – the name was changed to the Brandy Alexander.  You can learn more about the use of the name as well as why the cocktail was originally named Alexander here.

How do you make a Classic Brandy Alexander cocktail?

It’s such a simple cocktail.  Using the above ingredients follow these steps:

  1. Add the three ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Pour into a glass that has been chilled.
  3. Grate fresh nutmeg over the top of the drink.

  • Ice cream sundae using the classic Brandy Alexander ingredients
  • Brandy Alexander Pie
  • Brandy Alexander Frappe (simply add ice cream to this recipe and blend)

Classic Brandy Alexander Cocktail

Classic three ingredient dessert cocktail made with cream.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz cognac
  • 2 oz Creme de Cacao
  • 2 oz fresh cream

Instructions

    1. Add three ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice.
    2. Pour into a chilled glass.
    3. Grate fresh nutmeg over the top of the drink.

Notes

You can make this Brandy Alexander with ice cream instead of plain cream. Simply place a small scoop of ice cream in each glass and omit the cream. Make sure you put the glasses into the freezer before making the drink.
