Saturday mornings are sacred around here. Nowhere to run to, no-one to meet. Just a whole lot of relaxing the morning away. When we have a guest in the house we treat Saturday morning the same way, except I’ll often whip up something a little more special. The Easy Apple Cheddar Cinnamon Waffles are a cinch to make, and man, are they good.
I don’t take out my Belgium waffle maker all the time, but when I do, it’s “game on”. I’m not looking for a plain old waffle. I’m ready to tango with the possibilities of whatever season I’m in. So when I decided to make waffles this weekend – on the cusp of fall – I knew that a savory waffle filled with fall flavors was in our near future.
Please, get yourself a waffle iron!
Can you believe that I used to be intimidated by this machine? I bet I’m not the only one. The waffle iron first came to be about 150 years ago. You can read about the history of the waffle iron right here.
Waffles weren’t really a big thing in my house, and I don’t remember my mother using one. We were more of a pancake family. It wasn’t until I started traveling and coming across these contraptions in hotel breakfast buffets that I began my love affair with this appliance. Since then, I’ve been creating all sorts of different versions of this treat! I have the All-Clad Waffle Iron – it was a gift at my shower, and I love it. There are so many good ones out there!
Waffles aren’t just for breakfast
Waffles used for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! To be completely honest, I didn’t know that Chicken & Waffles were “a thing” until about ten years ago, let alone waffle pizza, or waffle crumbles!
The possibilities are endless. How about creating a brunch for guests that include all different types of waffles in a waffle bar? A dinner of Flank Steak with Herb Sauce and Three Cheese Waffle Hash Browns (Ree always has the best recipes).
Anyway, you get my point. Waffles are here to stay, and in ways I never would have imagined on my own.
Easy Apple Cheddar Cinnamon Waffles
These waffles combine three of my favorite fall ingredients. Apples, cheddar, and cinnamon. I first had apples and cheddar together as a teenager at a local diner, and I’ve been in love with this savory combination ever since. In terms of cinnamon? It’s one of the ruling spices in my home. Especially in fall. Well, who am I kidding? All year. I put a scoop into my coffee grinds every morning. Usually I make my waffles from scratch, but I had a box of Bisquick in the house from when I made my Cranberry Nut Pie and decided to go for it and use it for my Belgium waffles. I have no shame is using a shortcut to get the job done.
This recipe is easy to follow, uses very few ingredients, and the results are a delicious, savory waffle that your family will ask you for again and again!
