What makes a house a home for you?
Our home is a small ranch that I probably never would have chosen if we were together at the time. I am not a fan of how linear it is, and the fact there we have no guest space since my husband works from home. However, my husband was a bachelor and not taking a future family into consideration space wise. It was just him and his commute to work to worry about. We “met” (we had actually known each other in college) shortly after he purchased the home.
This is where we fell in love. This is where we brought our baby home. All of a sudden, it didn’t matter that I wouldn’t have chosen this house, it was home.
So as we go along I am always thinking of new ways to use the space we have, to get the most out of what we have. I’m constantly coming up with new ways to organize, to declutter. To continue to make it “ours”. Your space should be something you love to walk into. It should hug you when you open the door. Ours does that. It’s not always perfectly clean and organized. It’s not a model home, but it’s ours, and the love between these walls is immense.
And really, that’s what makes a house a home to me. The people within its walls. It’s the love that grows there and the memories that linger. The special place you sit when it feels like the world is falling apart. Different items you collect along your way with each other that surround you. The rocks from your beach vacation, the leaves you kept from last fall pressed into your favorite book. It’s the smells you create in your kitchen that cause memories to flood back.
It’s the most comfortable place in the world to you because you created it. You’ve surrounded yourself with the people, the things, and the memories that feel like a warm hug when you walk in the door.
Our sweet, humble, home. I love it here.
